Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors contributing to depression boys and girls from lower-income class in 2 metropolitan cities.
Methods: Participants in the survey for this study were 316 children & adolescents from lower-income class in Gwangju and Taegu. Data were collected from June to Dec, 2012 using self-report structured questionnaires. Three instruments were used in the study: Children¡¯s Depression Inventory (CDI) of Kovacs & Beck, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965), and Satisfaction with the Life Scale (SWLS) of Pavot & Diener (1993). The data were analyzed using SPSS/Win 20.0 programme.
Results: Among the subjects, 91.8% were in non-depressive group, 8.2% were in depressive group. As a hierarchial multiple regression analysis, The relative influences for depression were shown in the order of importance as follows; satisfaction with the life, self-esteem, satisfaction on school life & existence of parents.
Conclusion: These results suggest that we should make an effort to reduce depression of boys and girls from lower-income class, and develop the strategies to improve satisfaction with the life, self-esteem, & satisfaction on school life with supporting in place of their parents.
